June this year was especially giving when it came to music releases. From Migos’ Culture II album, Lil Baby and Lil Durk collaboration, Tyler The Creator’s ‘Call Me When You Get Lost,’ Polo G’s Hall of Fame and more, it’s almost hard to keep up with everything dropping lately and you might have found yourself missing out on a few gems. Luckily, we got you covered. Taking a look back at some of last month’s standout releases, here are some of my favourite June picks – with new music by Zach Zoya, Savannah Ré, Emanuel, Charmaine, Karl Wolf, Nate Husser and many more. All songs/projects are listed in order of release.
‘Feelings’ by Zach Zoya
Montréal-based rapper and singer Zach Zoya made tons of noise last fall when he dropped his critically acclaimed debut EP ‘Spectrum’ in October. The versatile rap/R&B artist made his return this summer and launched June off with his latest seductive single ‘Feelings.’ With this latest vibe, we’re pumped to see what’s next from this rising R&B talent.
’24hrs’ by Savannah Ré
Since the release of her debut EP, ‘Opia’ last winter – R&B artist Savannah Ré rightfully earned herself her first Juno win and also made history as the first recipient of the Juno’s first Traditional R&B/Soul Recording of the Year award. The Juno-award winning singer made her grand return this year with her new single, ‘24hrs‘ and also paired it with a graceful acoustic performance.
‘Pretty’ by Benita
Toronto-based R&B newcomer Benita empowers her clique and keeps it confident with her latest single and music video, ‘Pretty.’ With this latest release being the Canadian singer’s first single of the year, we’ll be looking out to see what Benita has in store.
‘TNT’ by Ruben Young ft. Buddy
Calgary meets Compton on Ruben Young‘s latest single ‘TNT‘ featuring rapper Buddy. Young’s latest release was also paired with a visualizer/lyric video, where the Canadian singer jams out to the track as he drives down the colourful streets of California.
‘Alt Therapy’ by Emanuel
Juno-nominated R&B artist Emanuel dropped his highly anticipated debut album ‘Alt Therapy‘ last month, a project which combined both his Alt Therapy Session 1: Disillusion and Alt Therapy Session 2: Transformation EPs with an addition of six new tracks, including a feature with Canadian singer Dylan Sinclair. As Emanuel shared his revelatory album, he also paired the drop with his new music video for his track ‘Worldwide.’
‘Still Dancing’ by Rêve
Montréal-based singer Rêve made her major label debut with her first single ‘Still Dreaming.’ This Banx & Ranx-produced banger arrived just in time for the summer and has us excited for what’s next from the Canadian newcomer. With her first single making such a bang, we’ll definitely be on the lookout for Rêve’s future releases.
‘Hood Avant-Garde (Deluxe)’ by Charmaine
Zimbabwe-born Toronto-based rapper Charmaine follows the release of her debut EP ‘Hood-Avant Garde’ with a deluxe version of the project. The hip-hop newcomer shows off her versatile style with 3 new tracks and features – from rapper Haviah Mighty remixing Charmaine’s ‘I DON’T CARE’, to Puerto Rico’s Valentino assisting on a new Latin-inspired vibe, to Charmaine rapping alongside Georgia-native Kali on her “sizzling” new track.
‘You Right’ by Doja Cat, The Weeknd
Fans worldwide have been going crazy awaiting the release of Doja Cat‘s third studio album, ‘Planet Her.’ The rapper paired the album release with her visually captivating music video for ‘You Right‘ featuring Canadian R&B and pop singer The Weeknd. The album also features guest appearances from Young Thug, Arian Grande, JID and SZA.
‘Ocean’ by Jared Daniel ft. Victory
Calgary-based singer Jared Daniel first hit our radar last spring with his introductory single ‘Give It Away’ – fast forward to the present, the R&B artist has released his third single so far this year, ‘Ocean‘ featuring fellow Calgary-based artist Victory. Jared continues to up his game with this latest drop and keeps us amped for his future releases.
‘Adult Supervision’ by Nate Husser
Montréal-based rapper Nate Husser dropped his highly awaited debut EP ‘Adult Supervision‘ last month. The EP followed Huss’ music video drop for his single ‘Sleep Like A Baby’ featuring hip-hop artist Jean Deaux and producer Eva Shaw. The project also includes a featured-assist by Chicago-based rapper Mick Jenkins on Nate’s track ‘Teriyaki.’
‘Found You’ by Karl Wolf
SOCAN award winning and Juno-nominated Lebanese-Canadian singer Karl Wolf returns this summer with the drop of his latest single ‘Found You.’ This new banger follows his ‘2AM Vibes’ album, which was released earlier this spring. Delivering an energetic vibe right in time for the hot season, we’re pumped to see what the Canadian legend has for us this summer.
‘Run’ by Omar Kadir, Mason Dane & Asher
Closing out the month with an international collaboration, singer-songwriter Omar Kadir released his new single ‘Run‘ featuring Australian artists Mason Dane and Asher. Produced by Liam Thomas, Omar states that he created this track during his last visit to Sydney, Australia and that he “had a dope night cookin this one up” on his Instagram.
