‘Tha Carter’ series is part of Hip-Hop’s DNA at this point, and Lil Wayne finally gives us ‘Tha Carter 5‘. Lil Wayne’s most recent work was not long ago when he featured on Swizz Beatz newest single ‘Pistol On My Side‘, shortly after he announced this project and with in a week it was released. The album had very high hopes prior to it’s release and had us itching for our first listen. At first glance I could already see how attractive the 23 song track list was, with 10 features I assumed the album would offer exactly what I was expecting. XXXTENTACION, Travis ScottNicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar, Sosamann, Reginae Carter, Snoop Dogg, Ashanti, Mack Maine & Nivea are the star studded lineup to further excel this project.

Finally I reached the moment of truth, where I had the chance to throw my headphones on and listen to the album. As soon as I hit play I found myself getting emotional over the message Tunechi received from his crying mother, with an iconic lighter flick to end the track the master piece kicked off. With ‘Don’t Cry’ being the first real song, I really enjoyed hearing what Wayne & X sounded like on a track together. A couple tracks later I found one of the rowdiest tracks ‘Uproar’, this bouncy tune was clearly a Swizzy beat. ‘Can’t Be Broken’ was my favorite tune on this project sandwiched between ‘Let Me Fly’ Ft. Travis Scott & ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’ Ft. Nicki. Two iconic tracks along with ‘Dope Niggaz’ Ft. Snoop, however my favorite feature on this project comes from Kung Fu Kenny. I have found myself in the wrong for doubting Kendrick as he absolutely snapped on the track ‘Mona Lisa’. It was great listening to Ashanti again, especially on an upbeat track in ‘Start This Shit Off Right’ with Mack Maine. ‘Perfect strangers’ took things to a deeper side of feels, with out being too mellow, ‘Mess’ & ‘Open Letter’ do vibe slower. Wayne does pay homage to himself in the track ‘Dedicate’, definitely well deserved he mentions his stature across the whole album

This album is easily in the Top 5 of 2018 releases, a year which has been great for Hip-Hop. I could honestly vibe with all of these tracks, but I forced my self to select my favorite 5.

TOP 5:

  1. Can’t Be Broken
  2. Mona Lisa
  3. Uproar
  4. Open Safe
  5. Let It Fly

Make sure you let us know your Top 5 after you listen to this project!
